About two months ago I watched a video of one of my favorite youtubers at the moment, Melissa Alatorre. In the video she swatched a bunch of different lipsticks which she thought were holiday appropriate, and I completely fell in love with one of the shades, Corset by Dose of Colors. And I decided that this shade must be mine!
I have to admit that I used to be really scared to wear dark lip shades, especially not on a daily basis. I’ve always felt that a dark vampy lip is too daring for me, (even though a neon purple is a completely normal lip shade in my book, go figure) and I never had the guts to wear any dark shades. However, once I’ve discovered Melissa’s channel, who wears a dark lip in many of her videos, I fell deeply in love with the trend and decided to go for it. And ever since, I’ve purchased quite a few deeper shades which have been added to my collection and my daily makeup routine.
Back to the video I mentioned above – Melissa dedicated the entire video to the Dose of Colors limited edition trio, Dare to Dazzle, and decided to swatch a few other shades as well. As I mentioned, I fell in love with the shade Corset and unfortunately (well, as it turns out, fortunately) for me the shades are only sold as part of the set and not sold separately. I was really debating with myself if I should get the entire set just for one shade, and obviously I decided to go for it, and boy am I happy I did!
And as you probably already understood, today I will be reviewing the Dare to Dazzle trio. (Spoiler alert – I’m deeply in love!)
About the company – Dose of Colors is an indie brand which was created about 2 and a half years ago, by a makeup artist named Anna (who has a successful Instagram account) who loves anything that has to do with art and makeup and she decided to create her own brand so she can express her creativity through the products she creates. At first the company released false eyelashes and lipglosses, and in time they released lipsticks, highlighters and liquid lipsticks. In the previous week they also released a line of loose pigments and they are planning on releasing a brush line in the near future.
The company’s liquid lipsticks are their most talked about product and from my experience the formula is great. I have to mention that the Dare to Dazzle trio are the first products of the company that I’ve tried. These specific liquid lipsticks have a metallic-matte finish to them, whereas the liquid lipsticks in the regular line have a completely matte finish so I can’t say if the formula between the finishes are the same (but from reviews I’ve read and seen, the formula should be exactly the same). The fact that the lipsticks in the trio have a metallic-matte finish is what had me drawn to them in the first place since I have never come across a liquid lipstick with this kind of finish.
The liquid lipsticks come in a see through plastic bottle, through which you can see the shade of the lipstick. All 3 of them have a sweet vanilla scent to them (smells like cake!) and the formula is a moussy one – not as moussy as the Ofra ones, but a bit more like the Kat Von D ones.
From what I understand the applicator in the regular line is standard one, a bit stiff with a pointed tip which allows an easy application. The applicator in the trio is completely different. It is flat and double sided (so you can use both sides), soft and a bit flexible (reminds me of the Urban Decay naked Skin concealer applicator). I’m guessing the idea behind this applicator is that the application will be easier and smoother but I actually find it harder, it lowers the level of accuracy and if you ask me, I say stick to the standard applicator. having said that I was still able to apply the product on my lips pretty darn well!
All 3 shades apply smoothly and evenly to the lips and require only one coat to receive an nice opaque shade. They feel very pleasant on the lips and once they dry they feel like velvet. Most importantly – although they dry to a complete matte finish, they do not dry the lips at all (unlike the L.A. Girl liquid lipsticks, which I wrote about In my previous post). The liquid lipsticks are extremely long wearing. They lasted on my lips for an entire day (!) while I only had to reapply one of them during the day, after I had a really greasy lunch (more on that later).
Like any other liquid lipstick, it is important to exfoliate your lips before applying since liquid lipsticks tend to emphasize dry and cracked lips. Like most of the company’s products, this trio is cruelty free, gluten free and paraben free.
The three shades in the kit:
Corset – The shade that caused me to purchase this trio. It is a deep burgundy-plum shade with a beautiful metallic sheeny finish. This is a unique shade like no other, I have nothing like it in my collection. It’s longevity is outstanding, it lasted on me a whole day (11 hours) without having to reapply. After eating lunch it faded a tiny bit in the center of the lips but this was not noticeable (unless I smiled a big awkward smile). This shade received a tremendous amount of compliments, I guess people like me in dark lips 😉
Scarlet Lace – This was a shade I was sure I was going to pass on (since I usually don’t like the way true reds look on me) but as it turns out this shade surprised me and is actually my favorite of the three. Yup, I like it even more than Corset. This is a true red, apple shade. It is matte and has little pink micro glitters. It might sound childish, a glittery lipstick, but the glitters are so fine and delicate and they give your look a special touch. I never thought I could love a red shade this much, but I have fallen head over heels for it. This shade required me to reapply during the day (after about 5 hours of wear), but this is because I ate extremely greasy food. Even then, I could’ve stayed with the lipstick as it was, but I wanted it to be as vibrant as it was when I first applied it in the morning.
Teddy – The last shade in the trio, it is a metallic brown-copper shade with a beautiful sheen to it. This as well is a very unique shade and I have nothing like it in my entire lipstick collection. Even though this shade is my least favorite of the three, I still absolutely love it and think it is gorgeous. It took some time getting used to this shade the first time I wore it, but throughout the day I found myself staring at it and falling in love. This shade is also very long lasting, and wouldn’t come off until I removed it myself at the end of the day.
The trio is a limited edition one, and will be sold while supplies last (it’s still in stock!) for $58. It isn’t the cheapest, but I truly think it is worth every penny. If you haven’t had a chance to try Dose of Colors liquid lipsticks I think this is a pretty good option to start off with. I have no doubt I will be purchasing more in the future! The formula is fantastic and these lipsticks have quickly become upon my favorites.
