Geek Time! – Makeup Geek x Manny MUA Palette Review

לפוסט בעברית לחצו כאן

Hi everybody!

I realized that I keep forgetting to start my posts with a “hi” or “hello” or “how you doin’?” and it isn’t very polite of me. And it’s really unlike me not to be polite, it’s in my Canadian blood…so I’m gonna have to remember to greet you all from now on. 🙂

So Hi! Hello! How you doin’? Thanks for visiting my little blog once again.

Today’s post will be all about a super wanted and hyped up palette that I was smart enough to purchase. Up till now all my posts were about items I know and love and have been using for quite some time now, but I felt like writing about this specific palette which I’ve owned now for only about 3 weeks (which is enough time to get a good impression). The palette I am talking about is of course the Makeup Geek and Manny MUA eyeshadow palette.

Manny is a makeup artist who has a successful Youtube channel (with more than 1 million subscribers!, and due to his success he collaborated with many companies such as Gerard Cosmetics, Ofra Cosmetics and of course Makeup Geek. To be completely honest, Manny is not one of the YouTubers I enjoy watching (and as I’ve mentioned in a previous post, I watch tons of different YouTube beauty channels), I just don’t really connect with his style. I have to give it to him though – the guy has got serious talent. From the few videos I have seen, his makeup skills are insane, his looks are always flawless and he definitely knows what he’s doing. The same flawlessness goes with this palette; when I first heard he will be collaborating with Makeup Geek I was sure I was gonna pass on it, but once I saw what the palette looks like I knew it had to be mine.

Makeup Geek is a company founded by yet another YouTuber, Marlena (whose channel is of course named Makeup Geek as well). The company sells a-m-a-z-i-n-g eyeshadows. Seriously they are some of my favorite eyeshadows. They are cheap ($6 a piece) and awesome quality. The company keeps on expanding and coming out with new products (eyeshadows with different finishes, blushes, eyeliners and so much more).

The palette created with Manny is a limited edition product. The day it went up for sale there was a total hysteria and it sold out within about 2 hours! It has since been restocked quite a few times and each time it sold out quicker than the speed of light. I was able to get mine on pre-order and it arrived after about a month, but it was totally worth the wait.

The palette comes in a sleek black packaging, with a holographic design of Manny’s logo (his name in a crescent moon) along with what looks like a meteor shower.

The back side includes a picture of Manny (within a crescent moon) and a dedication he wrote.

The palette itself is also black, with rose gold lines (which are typical for the Makeup Geek packaging). So simple and pretty.

The back side of the palette has all the names of the shadows, in the order in which they are placed. All the names appear within a crescent moon (again, since this is Manny’s logo).

The palette shuts with a magnet, which protects the shadows. I was surprised when I first held the palette to find that it is actually quite heavy (for a palette), which I am guessing is because of the magnet. I was also happy to see that a large mirror is included, however the mirror gives me funhouse vibes and it is not fun to look at, it actually makes me kinda dizzy. It’s too bad so much effort was put in to every little detail of the palette, but the mirror was neglected. Imho a mirror is a pretty important part of a palette and should be usable. Or maybe I just got a bad mirror? Who knows…

It’s no secret I love Makeup Geek shadows (if you follow me on Instagram you probably already know I have quite a few of their shadows in my collection) so I wasn’t surprised to find that the shadows in this palette are as amazing as the rest of the collection. The quality is great, the shadows are pigmented, blend easily, are long lasting and just all around great. I did come across a little bit of fallout with the lighter shades (I noticed this mostly with Artemis and Beaches & Cream). Also, it is important to use a base with the darker shades (Aphrodite, Insomnia and mostly Mars) since they can stain the eyelid a bit.

The palette includes 9 shadows; 5 completely new shades created by Manny, 3 that are already permanent in the Makeup Geek line and one that is permanent but exists as a loose pigment, and was pressed into a pan specifically for this palette. The palette includes 3 different finishes of shadows: matte, shimmer and foiled (highly metallic shadows). Each shadow contains 0.064 oz (1.8 grams) of product.

The eyeshadows in the palette:

Artemis

A shimmery yellow based cream shade with a touch of gold. A perfect shade for the brow bone or inner corner highlight.

Artemis
Artemis

Beaches & Cream

The first permanent shade in the palette. It is a matte nude peachy shade and it is a perfect transformation shade (for fair girls like myself). I actually already own this shade, but I don’t mind having it as a backup since I use it so much.

Luna

This is a mid toned rose golden bronzy shade, foiled and stunning. Honestly this is probably the shade that made me want to buy the palette. So what if I have a ton just like it in my collection? I’m addicted, so I’m allowed! (Grandstand by Makeup Geek is pretty close, except Luna has a bit more pink tones to it).

Cosmopolitan

The second permanent shade in the Makeup Geek line. Cosmopolitan is a beautiful peachy shimmery shade, with pink and red undertones as well as some gold sheen. This is a beautiful and unique shade, which gives a pop of color but can easily be used for a day to day look.

Sora

A mid toned orange brown shade (terracotta). This is a matte shade however it contains flecks of glitter which don’t come across once applying the shadow to the lid.

Frappe

The third permanent shade in the makeup geek line. It is a matte warm mid toned brown. This shadow is perfect as a transition color and also as a crease color.

Insomnia

The fourth and final permanent shade in the Makeup Geek line. This is the shadow that comes as a loose pigment and was pressed into a pan specifically for this palette, and is now a beautiful foiled shadow. It is a wonderful duo chrome shadow and it is my absolute favorite in the palette. It has red, brown and turquoise tones in it and it is just fabulous. I cannot say enough good things about it.

Mars

A cool toned cherry red matte shade (this is the only cool toned shade in the entire palette). This specific shade is a bit grainy and a bit drier than the rest of the shades. This means it takes a bit longer to build up the color (which I think is a good thing – with such a vibrant shade you don’t want to look like somebody punched you in the eye). From what I understand, because the shade is an intense one, it’s formulation is a bit different causing it to be a bit grainy so it is meant to be this way. This does not affect the performance of the shade in any way and it is just as wonderful as the others. I have nothing like this shade in my entire collection and it is indeed very unique.

Aphrodite

A deep warm chocolate (more like dark chocolate) brown. This is a matte shade and is great for the outer V of the eye or for creating a smoky look.

So all in all I only have good things to say about this palette. The palette itself is compact (except for the awful mirror), the shadows are pigmented and are of high quality and are long lasting. You can tell a lot of thought was put into the making of this palette, the thought to make this palette as versatile as possible – you can either create a simple day to day look or an all out dramatic look. It has a bit of everything; some neutral shades and some intense pops of color. In other words – I love love love this palette!

To finish things off, here’s a look I did for a wedding I attended. I used all the shades in the palette except for Luna and Cosmopolitan. (The pic is taken from my Instagram):

The palette has just been restocked and is up for pre-order (will be shipped out within a week of the day you purchase). You can get it in the Makeup Geek website. It is sold for $45, which is a pretty good deal if you ask me. Each regular shadow is sold for $6 and a foiled one is sold for $10. Since this palette includes 2 foiled shadows its overall value is $62, so you get a pretty nice discount.

So what do you think of this palette? Are you planning on purchasing it? Let me know!

Until next time,

Maya ♥
